![]() I am sure there are many different ignition systems for bikes so working out how they work and finding the easiest one would be the first hurdle.
Then making the ignition pickup work would be the next. Then as mentioned the Adv/Ret curve is not likely to be any good, and you may also need other inputs like vac and water temp which may be incompatible. Which engine is this? TT

![]() I dont know how these lads get on with bike carbs on a car engine. Having recenly built a car with itb's and a programmable ecu, i had to give in and book some rolling road time. I managed to get it running and driving but that was it. So off to the rolling road and what an eye opener, the difference in performance is staggering. With a knock sensor,lamda ,four gas meter and more importanly someone that knows what he is doing an exact air/fuel ratio Vs timing can be achieved. What makes the whole thing wierd is that the correct air/fuel ratio does not always make the most power at a given rpm , as revs go up and down against differing load conditions totally different mixtures and accelerator mixes were needed. End result was it went in with sub 350hp and came out with 525hp. That took a whole day and we got to 5500rpm so it needs another half day to complete. But what the whole exercise taught me was that yes these things can be put on and got working but that is not where it ends, it might tick over and rev but there is a good chance it would do a whole lot better if dialed in properly. Its not much different with carbs I had an old twincam mk1 escort years ago that i tuned and put 45 dcoe webers on , It would scream along at full throttle but drivability was crap, I took it to several places but in the end to a weber agent,the results were amazing, no flat spots,spitting back,flames and it was docile in traffic.He changed chokes, jets, emulsion tubes and just about everthing else.

![]() good idea but in the real world it would not work as you will come across loads of problems thats why there are programable ecus out there
i cant see how you would get the bike ecu to run twice the engine size at half the revs with out major programing then theres transfering crank pickups and so on. all engines are diffrent running diffrent size cylenders some filling them better than others at diffrent times and then you have diffrent styles of triggers and pickups have a look into megasquirt or microsquirt for inj, inj+spark or just spark thease little babys can run almost any engine setup with without edis units and are about the cheapest things out there theres code in the programing softwre to run roterys,jap car engines,bike engines and most common engines out there or just use megajolt with an edis unit but this can cost almos as much and is basic with no possibilty of running injection if you wanted to upgrade to injection at a later date Last edited by baz-r : 12th June 2011 at 02:36 PM. ![]() baz r is right, itb's and programmable ecu is the only way to go . That leaves you open to future tuning mods <cam change, gas flowed heads etc >with no further expense.
