So would using the pipercross ones with a hole cut in bonnet work best as I'm guessing the air inside the engine bay will be too hot even when the car is in motion?

These can look good on the side of the bonnet and will push plenty of cold air into the air filter:

Not ideal to have the filter out in the breeze as gets too much air and even gets wet.....filter wants to be in a box then cold air ducted through it. It's nonsense when folk say you have to ram air into the carbies as they can only take so much before turbulence cocks everything up.
