digi slr cameras?

My boy is in to photography so for his birthday we have brought him a second hand canon 35mm film SLR with all the developing kit for £45, a bargin for him to learn with and to take proper pics with (I hope).
I'm also looking for a digital SLR so that he can plug and play with the pics on his PC using photoshop etc. I've been looking at the second hand 8.0 mp ESO Canons with 18-55mm + 300mm lens for around £150-250 is this any good to learn with? Should I be looking at 10.0mp or higher though, I would rather spend more money on a better second hand quality camera than a shiney new lesser model. Any help here would be good as his birthday is only a few days away.

Iv'e got a canon 20d its only 8mp but its a great camera and can be had for little money now. Using decent lenses makes the difference. All mine are L series the kit ones are a bit shite really.

The 20,30,40,50d's are better than the 350-550 ect cameras.

Right thanks for that I'll ignore the mega pix count then. I'll have another look around and see if I can find a common model with as much realily avaiable interchangable kit that I can buy for the budget I have to play with.

As far as I know the canon lenses you have from the film camera will fit the digital canon slr body. Sadly film is dead but digital gives so much more freedom, you can almost instantly view the shot you've just taken and if you run out of storage you can either swap memory cards or delete the less good shots. Vital fact to remember though is a better camera does not necessarily make a better photographer. The photographer's eye is the ultimate tool in his armoury.

Got rid of all of my 35mm film stuff & spent it on Roadster parts

i have got a cannon 600d its disgustingly good at taking photos. keep in mind that if you go for any thing like a 10,20,60,70d the bodies are much much bigger and heavier than something out of the 350,400,500,550,600 range.

as for lenses an 18-55 is a bogo kit lens. it will work but almost everything else out there is better.

if i was in the same position as you i would be looking for something like a 400, 450 or 500d. couple of years old but great starter cameras that wont break the bank. and just to give you an idea of how good a 400d can be many of the ckc magazine cover photos have been taken by adams 400d the rest are taken on Ians 10d. both are older cameras both take great pictures.

Right thats the boys birthday present brought he's got a second hand Canon ESO 400d with a EF80-200 lens and the 18-80mm off the 35mm film SLR .

If he's not an award winning photographer or at least bringing home page 3 type birds by the time he's 18 I'll blame you lot for my poor choice of starter SLR gear, so there!
