There are 2 brackets. The one nearest the universal joint needs to be chopped off. The other one is used to secure it. Are you using the saturn version? Also I would measure the length of the column as I am on my third! They seem to get damaged easily when they are removed. I used a hammer to tap my first one in place and it shortened which meant I couldn't get the steering wheel on with the stalks.

I think there will be photos on my flickr page. I haven't chopped off the bottom bracket of my new column yet.

Build cost.... seems to be spending more on tools than car bits at the moment! (they will be handy in the future though).
