You need proof the engine is pre August 1995 to avoid a catalyst. Mazda's uk HQ should be able to provide this from the vin/engine number. If you're running the electrics and engine management from the donor vehicle this is not so much of a problem as all mx5s were supplied new with a catalyst so they are capable of passing the cat emissions if you keep the cat in the system, unlike the Sierra engines which were not able to pass the cat test.
