You could try some image processing on a photo after acid etching to try and show the numbers up. Sometimes the camera pics up colour difference that our eyes just dont see and by adjusting contrast levels you can offen get things to show up.

add another to the list. lucky I have the the donor chassis number where I think a bit of it includes the engine number so I can date it.

If you are using a Ford donor and you know that the original engine is in it. Then the last seven digits of the chassis are the engine number. Would start with two letters. For example mine was MU*****

Thats what I was going to use, I have the donor chassis number plates but can't find the engine number for love nor money.
I will write to ford with that number so get a date l letter
Not sure what to say at IVA though if the engine number is not visible, it would be covered up by the alternator if it was where its meant to be

If it was me and I couldn't find the number on the engine, but I knew what it was from the VIN I would just re-stamp the number into the block where it should be.

Providing all the bits were purchased above board so to speak you have done nothing.

Even the new crate engines from Ford come without a number stamped, the shop that puts it in is supposed to stamp the end of VIN on it.
