CVH won't start!
Hi Everyone,
I'm having problems getting my engine to start...My setup is a 1.8CVH with ZX6R carbs, Bogg bros manifold, ZX6R fuel pump and Megajolt ignition. The engine has been stripped, cleaned and rebuilt, the carbs have also been cleaned and rejetted. At the moment I'm trying to get it to fire running with just EDIS in limp home mode but having no luck. The engine turns over fine both by hand and with starter. If you try starting with full throttle it comes close to starting with quite a bit of smoke, however if you put on the choke the engine emits loud bangs similar to a backfire and the air and fuel mixture occasionally hiss back out of carb trumpets. All plugs are new, sparking correctly and have correct gaps, timing is fine, all ignition leads are new and are on correct plugs and fire in the right order, crank sensor wiring is okay as are all engine/head earths. I've taken the carbs off and all inlet ports are wet, as are the plugs in cylinders 2,3 and 4 but NOT in cylinder 1. I'm at a loss as what the problem is... does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Cheers, Nathan |

Pull the plugs and dry them at 100C in the oven
leave spark plug holes to elements to flash of fuel in bores. Whilst they are out spin the engine on the starter in 10 second bursts of 10 on 20 off for 3 mins. (to fill up the tappets with oil) Disconnect main fuel supply. Buy some easy start Test all plugs get spark Refit plugs Squirt 5secons of easy start past each throttle. Try and fire engine, if it fires keep pumping in squirts of easy start. If that does not sort it then the options.. 1) your mechanical timing is out 2) your ignition timing is wrong ( chekc firing order) 3) your getting no oil preasure in the followers. 4) no compression TT

Thanks for the reply TT, I'll give your suggestion a go!
As for the lack of pressure in the followers, how is that fixed? And what might cause no compression? Cheers, Nathan |

after a full rebuild or long period ofidleness it may take some time cranking to get good oil circulation and fill the tappets. During this time the engine may flood with fuel.
Lack of compression can come from 4 options. 1) Stuck open valve 2) Leak between head/HG/block 3) Stuck rings or general bore wear 4) damaged casting ( head, pison or block) TT

I found my 1.6 cvh was a real pig to start in limp home mode. Once I had the megajolt connected and the timing was more advanced it started a lot easier. What jets have you got in the carbs at the moment?
