Default shoot me down in flames.

For those that are fitting the ford four pots I know that its best to fit the later versions of the the ford offerings ie the zetec but is that cvh really that bad it warrants pulling out after iva and binning? I cant speak for the later 1.8 cvh but i have worked on and driven the older versions in the mk3 escorts. Both the n/a and turbo models. in my opinion they were good in the mk3 so how bad can they be in a car that weighs half as much. Surely a tweak or a turbo on one of these would be more than enough to out do a standard zetec. Am i missing something here. The below was robbed from the lowcrust site and is a cvh.

I personly like the 1600 CVH as I raced it for 5 years in my grasstrack stockhatch. The NA lump is easy to tune from the standard (xr2) 90bhp to 130bhp with very little money spent on it just a cam , exhaust manifold and better carb(s). How ever the jump above 130bhp costs a bloody fortune and thats where it's down fall happens as the 1800 Zetec in the later XR2i puts out 130bhp as standard and the 2000 zetec E from the mondeo makes that with much more torque. I can't comment on the 1800 cvh as I've very little dealings with it but I would have thought a set of bike carbs and a four branch manifold should help it along a bit. The one thing that does appeal though is that you can make them run with just 3 live wires, how I miss coils and dizzys

i cant say i have any love for any of the cvh range sorry and i have had loads apart over the years i cant even say the turbos where that good but thats me
if i had my choice of any of the pre 95 engines i woud go for a rover k (one that hasent been cooked!) its light its powerful and belhousings are availble
the 1.8cvh is an odd one out as well making almost all the tuning bits not fit
for the cost of it a zetec swap is the best way to get more bhp easyly

Consider running it on bike carbs, zx6r, with megajolt. A brief rolling road setup and you will get your emissions no problem for the IVA. Mark went down this route originally and got 130bhp, lots of bottom end power but not much top end. Made for a very nice car. Ran it with lots of smiles till the winter last year then upgraded to an ST170 engine, straight forward swap still running on the same bike carbs and megajolt also running the cam advance. He now has an awesome car for an extra £250 ish.

Just my opinion but it does make for a for a good starter car to get through IVA then there are some easy routes to good power if needed.

Time to get Black Robo......Andrew

My 1.8cvh originally made 107 as Adrian said but after some more tweeks and another session on the rollers it made 115bhp but plenty of torque

It dove nice and smooth and was ok on the road but lacked on the track

As said they are totally different from the 1.6 which makes them a tuning dead end really, i couldnt even find a cam for it

But with that said they arent as bad as some people make out and make a good starting point or even engine for good if your not that bothered about out and out performance and are on a tight budget

Spud, you will be thinking of my old 1.6cvh escort i had as my first car, that made 130bhp
