I'm with Spud. My Zetec install has cost me:

£160 for 2l engine and gearbox - including modified sump.
£20 for water pump
£10 for inlet manifold flange
£35 for throttle bodies
£30 for 1.8l flywheel and clutch (also came with free brand new alternator - lucky me!)
£100 for tuned length stainless exhaust manifold.

Still got to buy ecu, but I reckon I'll end up with 160-170 reliable bhp for less than £600 - good value if you ask me!

Just my two pennies worth!

Cheers

Adrian

This is getting asked a lot atm..

Mine was like this..

1.8 Escort Engine £200
Bike carbs £35
Megajolt £95
1.8 Mondeo Clutch £20 (ebay)
Inlet manifold £0.00, made it myself
2.0L cams £30
DOHC Starter motor £10

You need the Edis and coil pack, VR sensor (all came with my engine) and a different alternator bracket.

Easiest is a 1.8 from an Escort, no sump chopping mods etc. Water pump goes the right way, flywheel is much thinner/lighter than a 2L one.
Clutch is from a 1.8 Mondeo with a Capri release bearing.

The above gave me 155bhp (flywheel) on the rollers.

Steve

So the Type 9 gearbox bolts straight on or do you need an adapter?

how many people stick with the original Zetec injection/ECU? surely that'd be easier and cheaper for the budget minded? (just thinking outloud )

You'll really struggle to fit the standard unit under the bonnet, and although it's possible, it's not that easy to get the standard ecu to work outside of it's original car.

It's also really restirctive, so most people take the opportunity to release some more power. For the budget-minded, there's bike carb/bodies and megasquirt/jolt.

Cheers

Hmmmmmm.... ok I take your point, makes good sense. Which bike carbs are people using? (make/model) and how close is the jetting for initial start up?

For the ignition could you use the CVH coil pack and control unit?

Cheers.

and another thought, with the flywheel etc 1.8 cvh flywheel and clutch i gather the same fitment and definately fine for type 9 gearbox keeping things simple then the bit i am not sure about, the front pulley from the 1.8 cvh (needed for the crank sensor) will this fit? then the next bit about which sensor to use will it all work? the theory is there but its the pratice bit that fails!!!! also using the plenum on ebay nice piece of kit which allows the steering through and the standard ecu the thoughts and practical info please. NICE IDEAS END UP IN THE BIN!!!!!

1.8 zetec flywheel is the way to go. Has the reluctor ring in the back and the VR sensor sits in the block reading the 36-1.

Type 9 bolts straight on as the bolt pattern is the same as all previous Ford engines.

1.8 Escort flywheel (much thinner/lighter than 2.0) with a pre 98 Mondeo 1.8 clutch, Capri CCt132 release bearing and it all goes together nicely.
