From measuring the engine and GB it seems the front of the lever will be very close to the tunnel top. Is this correct or should I push the engine back slightly to give a bit more clearance?

This is exactly what I mean:
yep ours sits that close as well
it does select gears without fouling though
it wont be a big one if you wish to move that bit of tunnel......... were thinking about it
also i bet the upright is right inline with your reverse light switch........
have a look!!!!!!!!!
yep were probably gonna move or modify that as well
